January: Bricks and Strawberries

It’s difficult to imagine now, but once Hammersmith was famous for both bricks and strawberries.

Workers were up before dawn to start picking, and acres of soft fruit were grown in west London, before the market gardens made way for brickfields. Millions of bricks went into creating 19th century London – and the strawberries moved further and further away.
