29 Sep Transport Forum reveals new initiatives for cyclists
Hammersmith BID hosted a virtual Transport Forum on Tuesday 29 September, which highlighted a range of opportunities for cyclists, as well as wider travel developments across the Borough. The group also heard from TfL’s Andrew Hatch, Community Partnerships Specialist, who provided updates on TfL’s activities as the capital rides through the pandemic and negotiates lockdown restrictions.
Richard Duffill, Borough Cycling Officer at the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, announced that new funding from the Department of Transport has allowed the Borough to offer free adult bicycle training sessions for any Hammersmith businesses.
Bikeworks has been appointed to deliver this training, and CEO Jim Blakemore introduced the scope of the free sessions. Non-riders through to experienced cyclists can benefit from this service, which ranges from a door to door ‘practice’ commute with an instructor, through to small groups (one instructor per up to three riders) refreshing their road safety knowledge and working on confidence-building.
Alongside the free training, the Borough has also secured additional funding to install new bicycle racks for any Hammersmith business that requires additional parking. The storage ranges from full bike racks all the way through to single Sheffield stands, and can be installed either on or off business premises. Email here to request more details on either of these opportunities.
Andrew Hatch updated the Forum about the implementation of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, School Street closures and also the development of the Safer Cycle Pathway through Hammersmith. The route will connect to Cycleway 9 in Hounslow – a temporary version of which is currently being built along Chiswick High Road – to form a cycling network across west London. Richard Duffill reiterated the Council’s ongoing work to replace the existing temporary water-filled blocks along the cycle lane with more flexible semi-permanent barriers.
