19 May Safer streets this summer
Hammersmith businesses, residents and visitors to the town centre are set to benefit from Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s commitment to making our streets safer, through their investment in the newly created Law Enforcement Team (LET) that will be patrolling King Street from June 2021.
With the overriding priority of keeping people safe; the Law Enforcement Team will be working in partnership with the Metropolitan Police to proactively address the crime and antisocial behaviour concerns of our community and local businesses.
The 72 LET officers, equipped with PPE and bodycams, will be split into three teams across the borough, with a dedicated resource that will focus on Hammersmith town centre. This innovative approach to improving public safety is one of the largest of its kind in the UK. The team’s additional enforcement powers will enable them to issue community protection notices to prolific offenders and fixed penalty notices for antisocial behaviour – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Their activity will support Hammersmith BID’s Business Crime Reduction Partnership with the council’s community safety team and local police: boosting confidence and ensuring that our town centre remains a safe and enjoyable place to work and to visit.
Businesses can report any live incidents of concern directly to the BID-funded CCTV operator via their SafetyNet radio and resources will be despatched accordingly.
Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) legislation that can now be enforced by the Law Enforcement Team includes offences of street drinking linked to antisocial behaviour and amplified noise causing a public nuisance.
