28 Jul Cycle initiatives for Cycle to Work Day
The BID supports sustainable commuting, and will be marking Cycle to Work Day on Thursday 5 August.
Cycle to Work Day, which is run and promoted by cycletowork.org, seeks to encourage new cyclists, and to maintain an online cycling community, Love to Ride, where employees can share their own experiences of trying a new and different commute.
Businesses can support this initiative by communicating about the Love to Ride community; and by joining Cyclescheme. Over 45,000 employers and 9 million UK workers already have access to Cyclescheme, which provides a subsidised cycle purchase scheme for employees. Cyclescheme enables your employees to save 25-39% of the cost of a new bike and accessories, whilst also spreading the cost over a number of months. It’s completely free to join and easy to administer online. Businesses can save too: not only will you recover the full cost of the bike – you’ll also generate a NICs saving up to 13.8% of its value. More details about the scheme can be found here.
The BID will be hosting a Dr Bike session on the piazza at 245 Hammersmith Road on 5 August, between 8am – 12pm. Dr Bike provides a completely free cycle maintenance session for any Hammersmith cycle commuters. Our mechanics check tyres, wheels, gears, your saddle, pedals, brake function, frame alignment and can make simple repairs on site. For anything more complex, you will be given advice and a rough quote to take to a bicycle shop. You can also register your bike with BikeRegister, and join the UK’s biggest database of bicycles, improving your bike’s security, and increasing the likelihood of a stolen bike being retrieved.
Free coffee will be available to cyclists booking at Dr Bike. To book your slot, please click here.
The BID will also be offering free bicycle tours on Friday 6th August. Offered in partnership with LBHF, along with walkandcycle.london, the tours are designed for new or rusty cyclists who would like to explore the possibility of taking up sustainable commuting, or just getting more confident on a bicycle. The route will be about 30 minutes around Hammersmith town centre and along the river, and led by professional bike instructors, so participants are in safe hands!
There will be a limited number of bikes available, so if you’re keen to join but don’t possess a bike, then please do still get in touch.
