22 Oct ULEZ expansion comes into force
Expansion of the ULEZ
The ULEZ in central London is the world’s first 24 hour Ultra Low Emission Zone, launched in April 2019, and now with over 80% compliance. It has had a transformational impact on air pollution contributing to a 44% reduction in roadside nitrogen dioxide within its boundaries. Despite this, toxic air pollution is still the biggest environmental risk to the health and wellbeing of all Londoners, with thousands dying prematurely every year due to air pollution.
From 25th October, the existing central London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is expanding to create a single larger zone up to, but not including, the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205).

By removing older, polluting cars, motorcycles, lighter vans and minibuses, this will help to remove key air pollutants, as well as reduce CO2 emissions, contributing to tackling the climate change emergency.
Any vehicles that do not meet the requirements will be charged the following:
- £12.50 per day for cars, vans and motorcycles
- £100 per day for lorries, buses and coaches
The charge operates 24 hours a day, for 7 days per week, and the only exceptions are London licensed taxis. Put in your vehicle registration here to check whether the charges will apply to you.
For car drivers, this is the perfect opportunity to start thinking about sustainable commuting, by walking, cycling, or taking an e-scooter for those shorter trips around London. Find out more about active travel options in Hammersmith here.
Following the ULEZ expansion, as well as tougher Low Emission Zone restrictions on buses, coaches, and heavy goods vehicles, 96% of roads in outer London will comply with legal limits of nitrogen dioxide by the end of 2021.
