24 Jan Returning to the office
With the “work from home” guidance lifted with immediate effect last week, there have already been signs of an increased return to office working in London.
Initial data from Transport for London records 8% more journeys being made on the London Underground network last week, compared to the previous week.
The work-from-home guidance ended on Wednesday afternoon, 19 January. The Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, said that the Omicron coronavirus variant was “in retreat”, and that the government is no longer asking people to ‘work from home if they can’.
Workers are encouraged to speak to employers to agree arrangements to return to the office.
Transport for London said 1.09 million entry and exit “taps” were recorded up to 10am on Thursday on the tube – about 80,000 more than the previous Thursday’s morning peak. In addition, bus journeys were up 3% week on week, with 1.19 million boarding taps recorded.
The gradual return of office workers will be welcomed by town centre retailers and hospitality businesses in Hammersmith who are in a position to accommodate a higher footfall and increased number of customers.
