We undertook retail & hospitality surveys throughout January, to collect insight into December 2022 trade for Hammersmith businesses. Aside from gathering data that we can use to see how Hammersmith trade compares to the national average, this was also an opportunity to inform us of how we can best support your business in 2023.
Headline stats:
- Average rating for business trading December 2022 is 3.96/5 – very positive
- 77% had increased footfall YoY from December 2021 (however – Omicron environment)
- 88% were above target or on target for turnover
- 69% had sales above Dec 2021 figures, with a further 23% similar to Dec 2021 figures
- Best week for trading was fairly split throughout December
- Most businesses indicated the Christmas lights, market and tree in the town centre had a positive impact on their sales
- Strikes and staffing were the biggest challenges affecting trade. With strikes, this was both due to the impact on staff as well as customers. Some businesses indicated a significant loss of sales on strike days.
- Businesses indicated they would like the BID to support with more events in the town centre to boost sales, as well as marketing and promotion of their offer via the BID’s channels.
Throughout February, we will be gathering surveys from the office sector, to see how work patterns have changed. We will be undertaking this data research regularly throughout the year, to help us get a useful snapshot of Hammersmith business activity. Please get in touch if you would like to be involved.
