IDAHOBIT – International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT)

Wednesday, 17 May 2023, marks International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT).

Homophobia, transphobia and biphobia are the fear or dislike of someone based on prejudice or negative attitudes, beliefs or views about lesbian, gay, trans or bisexual people. Homophobia, transphobia and biphobia can also include denying somebody is lesbian, gay, trans or bisexual. This prejudice could also target those perceived as lesbian, gay, trans or bisexual.

IDAHOBIT is a campaign seeking to combat homophobia, transphobia and biphobia. Since the initiative was born in 2004, it has grown in over 130 countries and 1000s of big and small events have been registered.

Aims of IDAHOBIT

At Hammersmith BID, we wanted to mark the day and support the aims of IDAHOBIT. We want to celebrate sexual and gender diversity, raise awareness about ongoing discrimination and highlight the work needed to ensure all can live free of discrimination and violence. The campaign also seeks to mobilise and coordinate international events that raise awareness and encourage members of the community and allies to take action to promote equality.

Solidarity in Hammersmith

The theme for IDAHOBIT 2023 is ‘Together always: united in diversity’. What can your business do to show solidarity?

  1. Host an event: The UK IDAHOBIT Events page has information on upcoming events (including fundraisers and information stands). The campaign website also provides information on how to register your event.
  2. Communications campaign: Join Hammersmith BID and take part in the communications campaign. The organisers have provided both a communications kit and campaign illustrations, including visuals and copies for social media to support those actively promoting equality and tackling homophobia, transphobia and biphobia.
  3. Use the hashtags: #IDAHOBIT and #IDAHOBIT2023 are the hashtags your organisation can use to show solidarity across social media posts.

The campaign organisers have also put together a fantastic resources page, found in full here. We have also provided a summary of some of the resources below:

ILGA World Database

The ILGA World Database is a unique knowledge base on laws, human rights bodies, advocacy opportunities, and news about sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics issues worldwide.

TGEU Trans Murder Monitoring

The Trans Murder Monitoring (TMM) project systematically monitors, collects, and analyses reports of homicides of trans and gender-diverse people worldwide.

Impact of Anti-Gender Opposition on TGD and LGBTQI Movements

GATE’s global research report sheds light on the challenges to counteracting anti-gender mobilisation. It emphasises anti-gender groups’ deliberate dissemination of false and harmful information, the role of the media in enabling anti-gender narratives and actions, and the worsening human rights situation for TGD and wider LGBTQI communities globally.

Living Free and Equal

2016 report by UN Free & Equal on what states are doing to tackle violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and intersex people
