25 Jul Re-cap: London Climate Action Week 2024
A week of climate action: Hammersmith was blossoming with environmental activity for London Climate Action Week (LCAW) 2024. LCAW ran from Saturday 22 to Sunday 30 June and our Climate Festival and Clothes Swap helped mobilise climate action throughout our town centre.
Climate Festival
Hammersmith BID took to Lyric Square to deliver our Climate Festival in support of biodiversity and active travel.
Bee Workshop – Throughout the day, Hammersmith’s resident beekeeper was on the square showcasing Bee Urban’s observation hive (usually you can find these bees busy making honey on the rooftop of Lyric Hammersmith, supported by Hammersmith BID). As well as lots of fun facts about bees and the benefits of wildflower planting, Bee Urban brought sample beekeeping equipment, honey and beeswax candles to display.
Wildlife Workshops – To support the bees, we also welcomed Groundwork, supported by Livat, to the Square. Groundwork is a charity helping communities to create a greener future. The Groundwork team delivered their Wildflower Planting and Bird Seed Pick ‘n’ Mix Workshop to around 50 participants seeking to nurture local biodiversity.
Climate Pledge Board – Attendees were also invited to add to Livat’s climate pledge board and share positive climate actions they planned to take moving forward. Some of the commitments noted throughout the day included:
‘I will plant more for the bees’
‘I will only buy second-hand clothes’
‘I will walk and bike more’
Dr Bike & Bike Marking – Dr Bike was also on hand to provide bike maintenance. In addition to giving out advice, Dr Bike serviced several bikes, checking everything from wheels, brakes, gears and tyre pressure to lights, racks, pedals, saddles and more. Cyclists also had the opportunity to register their bikes on BikeRegister’s online database to help minimise the likelihood of bike theft.
You can find out about upcoming Dr Bike and Bike Marking sessions happening locally on our events page or on the Council website.
Clothes Swap
More than 11 million garments end up in landfill in the UK each week. To provide a more sustainable solution to fast fashion, we delivered our regular clothes swap with Livat. The clothes swap, which included a Sip and Swap Party on opening night, encouraged people to bring their pre-loved clothes and swap them for something new. The three-day swap facilitated 610 swaps and helped prevent 176.9kg of clothing ending up in landfill. In total, since our clothes swaps began in June 2023, our events have seen over 2,400 swaps and 700kg of clothing saved from landfill.
