Hammersmith sees action on personal safety this winter

Improving your personal safety this winter

This coming Sunday, many of us will enjoy an extra hour in bed as the clocks go back – a sign that the festivities of Christmas are approaching and bringing a renewed focus on indoor activities and socialising with family and friends. This change also brings with it darker evenings, and we are sharing some simple advice to help promote personal safety this winter.

Many things have changed for our business community and visitors to Hammersmith since the lockdown was eased and it may be worth taking a few minutes to consider whether this has affected your personal safety.

This October, we are sharing crime prevention advice created by the BID in partnership with the National Business Crime Centre and Metropolitan Police.

Out and About

The BIDs continued investment in improving safety in the town centre alongside our dedicated police team and the LBHF Law Enforcement Team is keeping our streets safe, however individuals are still encouraged to consider the following advice when out and about:

    • Plan ahead and be alert | Know your route, share your plans and arrival / departure times with a friend – walk confidently
    • Trust your instincts | Always act with your safety in mind. If you feel threatened, go with your instinct and find somewhere safe. Avoid quiet or badly lit areas
    • Only take items you need | If someone grabs your belongings, let them go. Your safety is more important than your possessions

In the workplace

    • Our advice encourages customer-facing staff to always remain confident and in control of their work environment
    • Politely engaging with customers as they enter the premises will achieve this, and will and maintain a secure atmosphere
    • Business are recommended to provide conflict resolution training for customer facing roles and carry out risk assessments to safeguard the wellbeing of their employees
    • Specialised advice to prevent violence against customer facing staff can be found here

You can read our in-depth personal safety advice here.

Hammersmith BID encourages you to enjoy the town centre. We will continue to develop our crime prevention and security projects for the benefit of businesses and the public.
