Celebrate Black History Month in Hammersmith

This October, Hammersmith is marking Black History Month with a programme of events celebrating Black heritage, history and culture.

From immersive exhibitions and live music to community events and performances, there are plenty of events and initiatives happening in Hammersmith.

 

A Journey Through Time: A Story of Africa’s Children

Saturday 24 October | 12pm to 7pm | 27 Hammersmith Grove, W6 0NE

Hosted by The Wayewa Foundation, A Journey Through Time: A Story of Africa’s Children is an audio-visual and immersive event exploring African history and heritage. It will include speeches from historical figures like Marcus Gravey, alongside an exhibition showcasing artists’ depictions of African greats. Visitors can also enjoy arts and crafts, a panel discussion and music.

All are welcome, with a limited number of free tickets available for H&F residents.

Guided Black History Walking Tour

Sunday 25 October | from 12pm | 245 Hammersmith Road, W6 8PW

Discover Black history in the heart of Hammersmith through a guided walk. The tour will bring the past to life by guiding participants through key landmarks connected to prominent and influential Black figures who lived and worked in the area. Explore their stories while meeting members of the local community and getting your steps in! Spaces are limited.

Black Heritage Art, Music and Story Exhibition

Saturday 17 October | 2pm – 7pm | Queen Caroline Estate Community Hall, W6

The Queen Caroline Estate Community Hall will host an afternoon celebrating Black history and heritage. The event will include a local art exhibition, music, cultural food stalls and more.

The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is putting Black creativity and culture centre stage this October with its For the Culture: Celebrations of Blackness Festival. The festival brings together performances, live podcasts, music, masterclasses and more celebrating Black artists, activists and thinkers.
