18 May Dr Bike: fitness, safety and free breakfast
To prepare for Bike Week, which runs from 30 May to 5 June 2021, the BID is hosting a new Dr Bike event in Lyric Square, on Tuesday 25 May.
Bike Week, delivered by Cycling UK, is an annual celebration to showcase cycling and how beneficial it is. The theme for this year is health and wellbeing. Cycling UK reminds us that if you cycle regularly in adulthood, you will enjoy a level of fitness equivalent to someone 10 years younger; and cycling to work can mean a 45% lower risk of developing cancer, and a 46% lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
Cycling also contributes to a reduction in air pollution and traffic congestion which is an important factor for our town centre.
The BID’s Dr Bike event caters for both new cyclists, who would like to start using their bikes more in the summer; and experienced commuters. Our bicycle mechanics deliver a free ten minute check of your vehicle, including your chain, brakes, tires, wheels, frame and gears. Adjustments can be made on site – for anything more complex, you will be given advice and approximate cost for a bike shop repair.
This session will also include FREE registration to BikeRegister – for anyone who does not already have this. Every police force in the UK uses the BikeRegister database to search for stolen and recovered bikes, and it is a vital tool to discourage theft, protect your property and to retrieve stolen bikes.
Registering your bike provides you with the following benefits:
- Lifetime registration on the BikeRegister database
- A registration Logbook, to be used as proof of ownership
- Secure online access to manage your account
Free breakfast will also be available for Dr Bike visitors: with coffee and pastries provided by Outsider Tart @ the Lyric.
