23 Apr Earth Month – April 2024
22 April marks Earth Day, an annual celebration of our planet. This year, to raise climate consciousness, we worked with several local businesses on a range of sustainability initiatives, including a clothes swap, green volunteering opportunities and Dr Bike.
Clothes Swap
Each week in the UK, 11 million garments end up in landfill. To celebrate sustainability and combat fast fashion, Hammersmith BID and Disney’s Green Team ran a two-hour lunchtime clothes swap in 10 Hammersmith Grove’s reception. Thank you to the building’s tenants who swapped a total of 42 items and saved 16.25kg of clothing from landfill.
So far, our clothes swaps have prevented over 500 kg of clothes from ending up in landfill and have seen over 2,000 items of clothing swapped.
You can find more information about our recent Spring Clothes Swap here.
Green Volunteering: Litter Pick
In support of Earth Day and Keep Britain Tidy, Hammersmith BID also teamed up with Hammersmith businesses for a series of litter picks. A big thank you to the 32 volunteers from Baker Hughes, CAA and Disney’s Green Team who joined us and filled a total of 33 bin bags containing 1,389 cigarette butts, 26 vapes and tens of cans, bottles, and bulky items.
We are proud to join #LitterHeroes across the UK, working with employees to create a cleaner and greener Hammersmith.
Dr Bike
Last month, we teamed up with the Metro Building and H&F Council to provide Hammersmith employees with access to Dr Bike, a free bike marking service. A total of 20 bikes were serviced and/or registered and we are looking forward to returning to the Metro Building in May and continuing to support people to engage in active travel.
Looking Ahead
In addition to Dr Bike, May will also be buzzing with activity for World Bee Day on 20 May 2024. We are excited to be teaming up with One Queen Caroline Street, one of Hammersmith’s large office buildings, and providing Hammersmith Honey as part of their Bee Day pop-up.
