04 Apr Hammersmith Bridge Restoration Project
There are plans to reopen Hammersmith Bridge to all traffic. Following our visit to the exhibition at St Paul’s Centre, Monday 27 March 2023, we gained insight into the history of Hammersmith Bridge Restoration Project.
History of Hammersmith Bridge
The original Hammersmith Bridge, the first iron suspension Bridge along the Thames, was built in 1827. However, during the annual University Boat Race, Hammersmith Bridge was hit by a boat. The decision to therefore close Hammersmith Bridge permanently was then made. However, 60 years later, the Prince of Wales opened Hammersmith’s second bridge.
1973, the bridge underwent strengthening and Repair Works. However, in 2019 fractures were discovered, and in 2020, the bridge was closed to all traffic.
In 2021, the bridge opened to pedestrians, dismounted cyclists, and river traffic. However, for motor vehicles to have access to the bridge during restoration works, Hammersmith & Fulham Council have commissioned Foster + Partners and COWI to develop pioneering plans to install a temporary double-decker truss within the existing Hammersmith Bridge structure.

Restoration Strategy
The temporary double-decker structure will be brought to the site to be assembled.
The 2 halves of the temporary structure will be launched from either end of the bridge and connected in the middle.
Existing decks, hangers, and chains will be removed for offsite restoration.
Pedestrian ramps will be installed before the temporary crossing becomes operational.
Reinstatement of the deck, chains, and hangers before removal of the temporary crossing.
Opening of Hammersmith Bridge.
