Hammersmith Highline Winners Announced

Hammersmith BID and West London Link are delighted to announce the two winners of the Hammersmith Highline ideas competition.

The winning entries are bauchplan).(, fish and chips and Richard Jackson, Hammersmith Hi-Line.

The competition received 63 entries drawing on inspiration from the New York Highline with the aim of reimagining an area of disused railway in Hammersmith town centre and recreating it as a destination for residents, employees and visitors.

The judging panel included representatives from the New York Highline; the Royal College of Art; local technology firm Chimni; Chartered Practice Architects; Medidata and Hammersmith BID.

The competition was open to all and there were no requirements to have a built environment or architectural background. The criteria were to submit original and limitless ideas that are interesting, as well as practical and feasible schemes.

Hammersmith Hi-Line
Richard Jackson’s, Hammersmith Hi-Line vision draws on his experience as a landscape and garden designer. The winning entry reimagines the area as a sustainable garden space including a promenade, stepped seating area and a boardwalk.

The winning features include: The Hi-Line, New York, Future Food and The Biomes. 

Judges’ comments about the design were:

“An ambitious proposal, with lots of interesting ideas regarding new ways of growing in an urban setting. Good educational value”

“Like idea of expanding width and use”

bauchplan ).( , fish and chips: is an escape from the urban hustle-bustle with the concept drawing on nature, water and connectivity along with the New York highline as inspiration.  With clever vegetation designed and placed to limit noise and control the micro-climate.

The winning features include: a connected highline, a liveable highline, the blue abyss and an ecological highline. 

The judges’ comments on this design were:

“So ambitious! Great to see a swimming area and sustainable water collection”

“offers many programming opportunities. Also, its sustainability element drew me in. The aquarium idea was also creative.”

Exhibition details
The winning entries along with all of the entries can be seen at Kings Mall shopping centre. Visit the Kings Mall shopping centre between 24th June –21st July 2019.

The entries will also be visible online, on the BID website, and on the Hammersmith BID Big Screen in Lyric Square.
