20 Feb H&F Climate Alliance
Our first roundtable discussion towards establishing a local Climate Alliance for Hammersmith & Fulham took place on 5th February 2020. The meeting was attended by local business representatives, as well as members of the local school eco-partnership, third-sector organisations, the residents’ climate and ecological emergency commission and Imperial College.
Hammersmith & Fulham Council has set a target for the borough of net zero carbon emissions by 2030, and the H&F Climate Alliance will be a coalition of organisations committed to tackling climate change.
The aim is to help organisations achieve their climate targets with support, advice and networking.
This session was initially to understand the achievements, priorities and development needs around carbon reduction for local stakeholders.
It was great to see the enthusiasm for building common purpose on the climate emergency, and the desire for momentum among the borough’s key organisations.
Some clear themes to build on stood out:
• Collaboration: scale of opportunities from joint vision and projects, as well as individual efforts
• Targets and objectives: need for clear definitions and scope, reaching some common aims, and accountability/visibility against these
• Mapping good practice and peer learning: highlighting and learning from achievements
• Technical advice: effective carbon-reduction measures organisations can take individually
• Audits: common templates – sector-specific approaches – joint-commissioning opportunities
Following this initial meeting, we would like to set up the Hammersmith Business Environment Network (BEN) to focus on business-specific climate change action. This will include:
- Opportunities for local pilot projects.
- Opportunities for joint purchasing e.g. renewables; sustainable heating.
- Offering a kitemark or accreditation for carbon reduction efforts.
