Stand Up Against Street Harassment

Stand Up Against Street Harassment

‘Every woman has a right to feel safe in her own city’

Street harassment directly conflicts with female empowerment but happens everywhere and every day.

Street harassment includes, but is not limited to:

    • Unwelcome touching / Pressing against someone
    • Sexual gestures / Inappropriate comments about someone’s body
    • Demanding sexual services
    • Indecent exposure
    • Public humiliation
    • Sexual innuendos
    • Pressure for dates
    • Graphic descriptions of pornography and uninvited tails of sexual exploits
    • Animal noises / Whistles / Hooting
    • Sexist graffiti / Jokes

If you are unsure whether someone is experiencing street harassment, look for their reaction. If you believe something isn’t right, it probably isn’t.

While 80 per cent of women reported experiencing street harassment, 86 per cent of those surveyed highlighted the lack of training available for teaching people how to intervene. In response to the demand for training, together with Right to Be and the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, L’Oreal has created several training sessions informing people how to respond.

      • The Suzy Lamplugh Trust has partnered with L’Oreal Paris to bring the expert-approved “Stand Up Against Street Harassment” international training programme by “Right To Be”, a session that includes bystander training and welfare and vulnerability training.
      • This programme drives awareness of harassment, upskilling and empowering individuals across various settings, such as schools, public transport, festivals, public spaces, and workplaces, to help defuse situations, discourage harassers, and support victims.
