Supporting Counter Terrorism in Hammersmith

National Counter Terrorism Security – ProtectUk and Winter Vigilance

Introduction

Terrorism poses a substantial threat across the UK, meaning an attack is likely. In 2017, the UK faced several large-scale terrorist attacks including:

  • Westminster Attack
  • Manchester Arena Bombing
  • London Bridge Attack
  • Finsbury Park Attack
  • Parsons Green train bombing

Since then, there have been 186 counter-terrorist arrests, and Hammersmith BID seeks to help all its businesses to put preventative measures in place and support the creation of secure public spaces. Before 2017, the target audience for the National Counter Terrorism Security Office consisted predominantly of larger organizations and crowded spaces (e.g., sports stadiums, shopping centres, etc.) However, adaptations have been made to support all businesses and workers. While the number of trained counter-terrorist police remains relatively low at 200 individuals, more available online resources now ensure a wider audience can be reached, with every staff member having access to relevant information.

Resources to support Counter Terrorism

ProtectUK:

ProtectUK is a new public-facing counter-terrorism platform. The website is an up-to-date and all-encompassing resource providing staff members with all necessary information about steps to preventing terrorist attacks.

ProtectUK App:

ProtectUK also has an app to download for apple and android devices. The app provides links to news, bulletins, available training resources, and a variety of actionable content under the incident response section.

Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI):

The CPNI has also produced a new video to help security staff deal with unattended bags or other items. Take a look at the video here and share it with staff at your organisation who have a responsibility for security. The video takes you through a simple protocol for identifying suspicious items: HOT, hidden, obviously suspicious, typical. The ‘Four Cs’ – confirm, clear, communicate, control – will then help staff respond appropriately to keep people safe.

ACT Awareness E-Learning:

Counter Terrorism Policing has also released Awareness E-Learning, a course devised by counter-terrorist officers to ensure relevant training can reach the widest audience possible.

Summary:

BIDs are at the centre of public safety, with businesses revolving around the community. Relevant training can make a real difference in community safety.
