What does Black Art Mean to you?

What does Black Art Mean to you?

As part of Hammersmith BID’s 2020 events programme, a digital exhibition entitled “What does Black Art mean to you?”was commissioned during Black History Month.

After a very well-received period being broadcast on the BID’s Big Screen this Autumn, there’s now a chance to enjoy the art and poetry for a second time.

The work is now available to view on our website for a limited period of time. You can access the video and accompanying information here.

This digital exhibition asked key figures in the Black creative community to provide a short quote on what Black art means to each of their work and lives, whilst also presenting the artwork of some of the most exciting Black visual artists living in Britain today.

The first part of the digital exhibition showcases works from some of the finest established and emerging black artists in London. There are pieces from artists such as Birungi Kawooya, Emily Moore, Anais Harrison and Emma Prempeh. The second part of the exhibition focuses on key figures within the Black Art Community; the portraits of these key figures feature alongside a short quote on what Black art means to each of them.

The piece was curated by Bolanle Tajudeen, the founder of Black Blossoms School of Art & Culture, with portraits by up-and-coming London-based photographer Sadé Elufowoju and designed by Azarra Amoy.

The BID will be continuing to focus on art installations, community projects and local and seasonal events as we move towards our fourth term. Read more about the BID’s Renewal plans for Community and Partnerships here.
