24 Mar Simpler Recycling legislation: coming soon
Hammersmith BID were pleased to attend the H&F Climate Alliance Lunch ‘n’ Learn on the Simpler Recycling laws coming into effect on 31 March 2025.
The legislation applies to workplaces with 10 or more full-time employees and obligations include:
- Separate food waste from general waste and arrange collection for recycling or recovery.
- Separate all Dry Mixed Recycling (DMR) and arrange collection for recycling.
- Separate paper and card and arrange collection for recycling.
- Apply these changes to any publicly accessible bins.
Attendees were told that DEFRA’s initial approach will be education before enforcement, however it was emphasised that everyone will need to play their part to ensure the correct disposal of waste.
Where a business is a tenant and the landlord services the premises, it will be for the landlord to ensure adherence to these new rules.
It was also confirmed that every time waste “changes hands”, a Waste Transfer Note is needed so that the disposal is traceable. Again, in a serviced building it will be for the landlord to obtain an up-to-date Note from the cleaning company. However, those who own their premises outright will be directly responsible.
The Government is ultimately looking at creating a digital waste database to increase transparency and allow companies to track their waste’s journey from source to endpoint.
