26 Jan Community support through lockdown
While the majority of Hammersmith’s businesses remain closed, and most employees are working from home, the BID has been on hand to support businesses and the community wherever possible.
With the closure of Byron in Hammersmith shortly before Christmas, the landlords of the property donated all the remaining furniture, food and fixtures to our homelessness charity, Small tap, big change.
Hammersmith BID was able to step in and coordinate the cleaning, sorting and delivery of all the items – including furniture, surplus food, fittings and equipment – to the charities supported by Small tap, big change. We were also able to help other organisations with specific requirements.
While food and some furniture was delivered to Small tap, big change‘s charities, a substantial amount of catering equipment, including freezers and fridges, was donated to The Smile Brigade. This has assisted the charity with its free meals and delivery service which has been in more demand than ever over lockdown. A local school was able to receive internal shelves and some excess food; and a local restaurant also received some stock. The BID used its e-cargo bike delivery service, Parcels not Pollution, where possible, to deliver the items.
In another initiative, Specsavers Hammersmith donated 800 polo shirts just before Christmas, and the BID team were on hand to sort and deliver the clothing to three local homelessness charities: St Andrew’s Church, Baron’s Court Project and The Smile Brigade.
Using our delivery service, Parcels not Pollution, again meant that we could distribute the goods by e-cargo-bike, keeping pollution and congestion to a minimum. Additional polo shirts have been stored in a safe space and will be provided on request to any of our four charities within Small tap, big change, or other local charity that needs them.
