Everyday Plastic Workshop Recap

Everyday Plastic Workshop Recap

Monday 16 to Friday 20 October 2023 marked Circular Economy Week. In addition to our Community Clothes Swap, we marked the occasion by inviting Everyday Plastic, a not-for-profit tackling the plastic problem in our society, to deliver a talk and workshop. Hammersmith BID continues to support businesses with their environmental targets by raising awareness around plastic-free initiatives and empowering people to make changes on both an individual and organisational level.

Thank you to the Climate Alliance at Hammersmith & Fulham Council for supporting the event, to the Lyric Hammersmith for hosting and to the engaged group of attendees from Hammersmith businesses.

Talk and Workshop

Before the attendees got stuck into the workshop, Everyday Plastic took the time to inform people of the scale of the plastic problem. In the UK, the average person throws away more than 34 kg of single-use plastic annually. During ‘The Big Plastic Count’, the campaign founded by Everyday Plastic and Greenpeace, it was estimated that UK households throw away almost 100 billion pieces of plastic packaging, of which only 12% is recycled in the UK.

Furthermore, to alert people to how they could reduce the amount of single-use plastic, the workshop helped attendees realise what they already knew and what other steps to reduce plastic they could implement at work and in their everyday lives. By nudging people to think about what a less-plastic society could look like in 2030, the workshop inspired people to get to grips with the plastic problem, reduce their plastic waste and get involved in the fight against it.
