04 Feb Hammersmith East Public Realm Vision – stakeholder update
On 28 January, Hammersmith BID held a stakeholder update for the Hammersmith East Public Realm Vision (PRV), kindly hosted by Disney EMEA HQ.
The PRV focuses on the area to the East of Hammersmith – specifically the Lower Bus Station, Flyover walking route and Butterwick, which connects these spaces and links to key destinations including Disney HQ, The Ark and Novotel.
Stakeholders from a range of organisations including BID levy payers attended the meeting to hear about project progress (and conversely the areas that will require further partnership working):
Butterwick
In keeping with the improvements carried out by Metro Building on the opposite side of the road, Disney invested in a comprehensive planting scheme along its private land on Butterwick. Trees, vines, shrubs and flowers add variety and pops of colour to the area. Disney will continue to work with the Council (a partnership facilitated by Hammersmith BID) to discuss more planters on the pavements and other greening measures.
Flyover walking route
Historically, Hammersmith BID worked to collect data and feedback on local employees’ perceptions of Hammersmith. We noted that the walking routes under the Flyover frequently came up as a place where people and especially women and girls can feel unsafe. We shared this information with the Council and are pleased to report that the Council has agreed to assign budget to better lighting in that area. The BID will continue to work with partners to explore other measures that will soften the harsher environment under the Flyover. These include maintaining high quality planting along walking routes and more public art on the Flyover piers.
Lower Bus Station
Regarding areas that will require more work, the Lower Bus Station is a challenging spot with intersecting land ownership and several stakeholders. Hammersmith BID was happy to report ongoing conversations with London Bus Services Limited (LBSL) and Transport for London (TfL), alongside the Council. The BID met with LBSL and TfL to go over some first version CAD drawings of technical designs for the Lower Bus Station. We received in-person comments and an explanation of next steps. We will need to consider operations and the financial cost of placemaking measures in this area – partnership working and an even better understanding of available funding is necessary.
