23 Aug Next steps on our new Public Realm Vision
A Network of Connected Spaces
Hammersmith BID is making progress with the development of a Public Realm Vision – developing and introducing innovative ideas to support Hammersmith’s developing infrastructure.
World-renowned architect Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners is working with the BID to design and create a high-quality public realm for the benefit of all, by creating a network of connected spaces, allowing a new image of Hammersmith town centre to be imagined. The project is being realised in partnership with Hammersmith & Fulham Council.
Designs will champion sustainability, inclusivity, and local identity; with elements including alfresco dining, greening and new landscaping.
To introduce the first-year phase of this ambitious project, the BID has launched a dedicated web page with engaging and informative content, including:
-
Summaries of project phases and when work on each phase is projected to be completed
-
Concept drawings of development sites
-
Maps showing key sites and routes which will be incorporated
Key strategic sites and structures in the town centre will contribute to, and be enhanced by landscaping and urban redevelopment. For example, Hammersmith Flyover is being reimagined as a ‘unified surface’ providing unique spaces for gathering, play, and other activities. Lighting and planting projects will enhance the site and transform less-used space into an attractive, accessible urban environment.
The project will also seek to address air pollution, and will work in tandem with growing efforts to reduce vehicle traffic. Renewed wayfinding, improved surfacing and crossings, lighting, and greening initiatives are just some of the improvements which residents and businesses will see in the course of the project.
