10 Jul Re-cap: London Climate Action Week 2023
A Week of Climate Action
Hammersmith was buzzing with activity for London Climate Action Week (LCAW). LCAW ran from Saturday 24 June – Sunday 2 July 2023, seeking to create a resilient net-zero future by harnessing the power of London for global climate action. Hammersmith BID hosted several events to support businesses and residents reach their environmental targets.
27 June – Lyric Square
Dr Bike and Bike Marking
Employees, residents and visitors could access free bike maintenance and marking on Lyric Square. On the day, Dr Bike serviced 21 bikes, and 21 bikes were also registered as part of BikeRegister’s online database, helping to reduce the risk of stolen bikes. Thank you to Dr Bike and the Law Enforcement Team (LET) at Hammersmith & Fulham Council (H&F) for supporting the event.
Micro-mobility operators, TIER and Lime, were also on Lyric Square. Staff were on hand to give out free helmets and answer any questions about the expansion of bike and scooter fleets into the borough. The information stand helped enhance awareness about how bikes and scooters can support climate action and a net-zero future.
IKEA’s Circular Hub sells second-hand IKEA goods at a discount, aiming to reduce waste by giving pre-loved furniture a second lease of life. Staff from IKEA’s Circular Hub came down to hand out discontinued products to reduce waste. The team answered questions about second-hand furniture and the benefits which purchasing from the Circular Hub can have for the planet.
Biodiversity: Bee Workshop and Wildflower Planting
Later in the day, Hammersmith’s resident beekeeper arrived on the square with an observation hive, attracting over 100 people. He brought sample beekeeping equipment and lots of fun facts about bees. In addition, and as part of our commitment to Hammersmith’s biodiversity, we also organised a Wildflower Planting Workshop in partnership with Livat, run by Groundwork. A big thank you to Veolia for funding our biodiversity planting equipment.
28 June – Community Litter Picking
Community Litter Picking: June 2023
After a busy Tuesday on the square, activities for LCAW continued into Wednesday. We met with 12 volunteers from across Hammersmith’s employee and resident community for our quarterly Community Litter Picking event. Volunteers were briefed on Lyric Square and headed to Hammersmith Grove Parklets, St Paul’s Green and Talgarth Road for a 90-minute litter pick before ending at the Novotel for a debrief, some pictures and the litter drop-off. Our volunteers filled 14 bags of litter containing dozens of cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and coffee cups, hundreds of cigarette butts, ten vapes and several bulky items such as cardboard boxes and fluffy toys.
You can find out more about how to get involved in our Green Volunteering events here.
29 and 30 June – Community Clothes Swap
Each week in the UK, 11 million garments end up in landfill. To conclude the week of LCAW activities and combat over-consumption, we worked with Livat to organise a clothing swap. Held in the SOOK space in Livat, our clothing swap spanned over two days and gave people the opportunity to swap unwanted items for other swappers’ second-hand clothes. Thank you to those in the community who came to Livat to support the initiative. Overall, the Environment Department at H&F calculated that 420 items were donated/swapped and 112.07kg of clothing saved.
Thank you to those who helped out with and attended our LCAW events. If you have any follow-up questions, please don’t hesitate to email us.
