03 Jul Community Litter Picking June 2023
Community Litter Picking – London Climate Action Week (LCAW)
For LCAW we met with 12 volunteers from across Hammersmith’s employee and resident community for our quarterly community litter pick. Volunteers were briefed on Lyric Square and headed to Hammersmith Grove Parklets, St Paul’s Green and Talgarth Road for a 90-minute litter pick before ending at the Novotel for a debrief, some pictures and the litter drop-off.
Thank you to our volunteers for filling 14 bags of litter containing dozens of cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and coffee cups, hundreds of cigarette butts, ten vapes and several bulky items such as cardboard boxes and fluffy toys.
Quotes
‘A member of the public passed us by and thanked us, which was lovely’ (volunteer)
Words used to describe the Community Litter Picking – ‘cathartic’, ‘fun’, ‘rewarding’, ‘relaxing’ (community volunteers)
Get Involved
Hammersmith BID works with local businesses to support the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. We facilitate litter-picking sessions and other green volunteering opportunities as part of our sustainability commitment. Every act to protect the environment, no matter how small, makes a difference. The campaign inspires people to eliminate litter for current and future generations. Green Volunteering can help permanently change behaviour, spotlight the problem and offer creative solutions.
Volunteers keep a tally of cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, vapes and bulky items they collect throughout the litter picking event. The BID team gathers these figures at the end and reports them via the Keep Britain Tidy website.
We are proud to join #LitterHeroes across the UK, working with employees to create a cleaner and greener Hammersmith.
